nternational Women’s Day, a day to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, is celebrated each year on March 8th. It’s also a day to call attention to all the work still left to be done. This year’s theme is #BalanceforBetter, which focuses on building a more gender-balanced world.
Around the world, more women are in the labor force than ever before, and incomes are increasing, making them a force to be reckoned with. According to Bloomberg, women drive 70-80% of all consumer spending—which in 2018, equaled an estimated $40 trillion globally—through a combination of their buying power and influence. Even if a woman is not earning a paycheck, she is likely the decider of household expenditures.
While there is still a long way to go to achieve true gender parity, women are using their rapidly increasing spending power to change the way companies operate. As of 2018, there were 12.3 million women-owned businesses in the US. Since 2007, the number of women-owned businesses has increased by 58%.
